"The creative process is not a technique by which talented persons complete a finished work of art. Rather, the creative process is the means by which every human being makes meaning of the events in his life." --Howard McConeghey

Just some of what your child will learn in art this year:

* to understand the creation of art as a process that unfolds one decision at a time

* to understand how artists use the elements of art: color, value, line, shape, form, texture, and space to create artwork

* to understand how artists use the principles of art: balance, contrast, proportion, pattern, repetition, rhythm, emphasis, unity, and variety to create successful artwork

* to learn about art in other cultures and times in history

* to solve problems creatively

• to see mistakes as "creative opportunities" that don't always need to be erased

• to realize that artists don't always know ahead of time what the artwork will look like

• to be an independent learner and not rely on the teacher for all the answers

• that there is not just one "right" way to make art and — most importantly —

ART IS FUN!
